WHO Director-General Continues to Call on Booster Program Moratorium

Over 100 countries are short of immunizing even 40% of their populations, reported the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) recently, as many of the wealthiest nations have already initiated third shot booster programs. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for a moratorium on boosters in August, lamenting the need for vaccine equity and not vaccine nationalism among the richest nations. But that is exactly what is happening, as SARS-CoV-2 cases ironically surge more in the heavily vaccinated, wealthy nations as compared to low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) which all things being equal report lower vaccination rates but also in many cases lower COVID-19 infection rates. Countries from the United States and Canada to Israel and Germany have ongoing booster programs despite calls from the WHO to halt such activity. Director-General Tedros suggests these programs are a scandal as wealthy nation patients access an ongoing risk-mitigation treatment in hopes of preventing severe symptoms including hospitalization.
