Type 2 Diabetes Prior to Age 40 Tied to Mental Illness & Hospitalizations

A clinical team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong studied the connection between patients with type 2 diabetes prior to the age of 40 and mental health hospitalizations. Apparently, those under the age of 40 with type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to be hospitalized for mental illness as those that develop the disease after 40. This finding raises considerable implications.

The study also shows that rates of kidney disease are seven times higher than in younger people with type 2 diabetes. The risk of hospitalization for heart disease or stroke was twice as high, and the risk of hospitalization from infection was nearly doubled in the younger group. The investigators’ suspect several reasons for this finding. Follow the link to learn more.
