Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant Among Vaccinated Healthcare Workers, Vietnam

Nguyen Van Vinh Chau and Nghiem My Ngoc of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases and team studied breakthrough infections among vaccinated healthcare workers of a major infectious diseases hospital in Vietnam. The researchers discovered several elements associated with breakthrough COVID-19 infections.

The Vietnam-based research uncovered what’s becoming apparent: breakthrough Delta variant infections associated with high viral loads, prolonged PCR positivity, and reduced levels of vaccine-induced neutralizing antibodies, which points to the driver for vaccinated to vaccinated transmission. Of interest, the study determined that physical distance helps reduce the spread of the virus.

Recently published in preprint, the study needs to be reviewed and published for full verification. Study researchers shared, “We collected demographics, vaccination history, and results of PCR diagnosis alongside clinical data. We measured SARS-CoV-2 (neutralizing) antibodies at diagnosis and at weeks 1, 2, and 3 after diagnosis. We sequenced the viruses using ARTIC protocol.” For more on this protocol, follow the link.
