Thailand Moving off of SinoVac COVID-19 in Favor of AstraZeneca: Are More Nations to Follow?

How effective is the COVID-19 vaccine from Sinovac? In Thailand, the chatter suggests that a Southeast Asian nation will dump the vaccine developed in China in exchange for the AstraZeneca vaccine product. Some analysts share with TrialSite that more countries are to follow Thailand’s lead. Already, intelligence suggests that those countries using Sinovac require an urgent follow-up with a booster dose of mRNA or vector vaccine.

How thorough were the studies done in China? It’s certain that Phase 3 studies were offshored to different countries and many of these were delayed. The higher efficacy and quality out of the Western vaccine producers still evidence some challenges, and TrialSite suggests the Chinese vaccines may over time lead to considerable challenges.

Published recently in the Bangkok Post, Thai Public Health Minister Anutin Chanvirakul recently announced the change as they seek to up the quality during the second jab. Thus for those in Thailand that received a first Sinovac dose will now receive a second jab with the Oxford/AstraZeneca product.
