Site Watch: Riverside General Hospital Medicare Fraud and Bankruptcy

Read Todd Ackerman’s piece in Houston Chronicle focusing on a Houston psychiatrist has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison and ordered to pay nearly $22 million in restitution for his role in a Medicare fraud scheme at Riverside General Hospital, the latest in a string of judgments about the case.

The latest judgment in the $155 million scheme was handed down Tuesday, 16 months after a jury convicted Riyaz Mazcuri of one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and five counts of health care fraud. Mazuri, 67, was an attending psychiatrist at Riverside.

Under sentencing by U.S. District Judge Vanessa D. Gilmore of the Southern District of Texas, Mazcuri received 12 1/2 years in prison and must pay $20.6 million to Medicare and $2.25 million to Medicaid.
