Shreveport Trial Site Investigates Replacement of Needle Biopsy with Blood Test to Diagnose Breast Cancer

For women who have an abnormal mammogram, the typical next step would be a needle-based biopsy involving ultrasound and the removal of the tissue to evaluate for cancer. But what if there was a way to skip that step? What if the presence of cancer could be diagnosed via a blood test? That would be much easier and more economical, and that’s exactly what Christus Shreveport Bossier Health is now testing in a clinical trial at a Shreveport trial site location.

Based at Christus Cancer Center the trial site’s clinical research nurse coordinator, Jennifer Powell, discussed this important study on local television, ABC KTBS 3.  Powell declared, “It’s a blood collection. And it's going towards hopefully not having to go through the biopsy anymore.” The clinical coordination, the foundational role for any trial site, shared with local Shreveport media that “Hopefully we can get to just having blood drawn instead of having to go through a biopsy.”

Powell continued that the goal here would be to investigate a new diagnostic approach, although a biopsy would still need to be done to ensure the standard of care.
