Quietly, Steadily A Digital COVID-19 Passport Expands in America

With little fanfare, debate in the United States appears headed towards embracing a European-style national digital passport called 7878SMART Health Care. It is a voluntary identifier that includes minimal, but important, information, including whether one has been vaccinated. Currently under development by a not-for-profit known as The MITRE Corporation (MITRE), they are a U.S.-based research organization with close ties to the federal government. In fact, MITRE also manages federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) backing administrative branch agencies, such as the Department of Defense (DoD).  Now the stealthy organization develops a digital vaccine pass that could impose a digital identification web around 200 million people.

As recently authored by NBC’s David Ingram, the MITER-developed system—known as SMART Health Cards—would contain personal health identifiers such as name, date of birth, date and brand of vaccines, doses, and more all packaged up and infused into a QR code.
