Potential ‘Game Changer’ for Treating Depression: Stanford’s SAINT Protocol

Mental health issues in America were already concerning prior to the pandemic, but now these issues may go to epidemic levels. With nearly 20 million adults in the United States alone struggling with at least one depressive episode, this accounts for nearly 8% of all adults in the world’s third most populous nation and the largest economy as measured by gross domestic product (GDP), reports the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With the current standard of care not working for about 50% of depression patients, new treatments are desperately needed, and a recent study conducted at Stanford University School of Medicine investigates an intriguing novel approach. A novel magnetic brain stimulation brought rapid remission to almost 80% of the study participants with severe depression. Led by Nolan Williams, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, the investigator declared recently that this approach “…could be a game changer.”
