With Huge Demand for GLP-Inhibitors for Obesity Comes an EMA Investigation--Risk of Suicide Investigation 

While the demand for obesity drugs based on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP&mdash;1) agonist explodes some concerns emerge, such as the reality that they need to be taken for life, but also for other concerning side effects, including the potential for suicide. Key products developed on this science include those from Novo Nordisk (Wegovy) and now, Eli Lilly ( Zepbound), the latter being a GLP-1, GIP receptor agonist. This summer, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced an investigation into this class of medicine, an effort not widely touted in America.
In Europe, Saxenda and Wegovy are authorized for weight management, together with diet and physical activity in people who are obese or overweight in the presence of at least one weight-related health problem. Ozempic is authorized for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise but has been used off-label for weight loss. Suicidal behavior is not currently listed as a side effect in the EU product information for any GLP-1 receptor agonists.
