A meningococcal disease outbreak has been reported, ironically and prominently more by media overseas than in the United States proper. With Virginia as the epicenter, reports say at least 5 people were killed, and 27 people with the disease, with a dangerously high case fatality rate of 18.5%. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just issued a national health alert for the deadly infection called Vibrio vulnificus.
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) recently reported a statewide outbreak of the bacterial disease, sickening 27 people since June 2022, including five patients who died from complications of their infections.
