UCSD’s Dr. Pradipta Ghosh Secures $3.5m to Target Crohn’s Disease

Afflicting over 2 million people worldwide, Crohn&rsquo;s disease, the difficult to treat condition needs more targeted, effective regimens. Enter a $3.5 million to University of California, San Diego (UCSD) from&nbsp;The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust&nbsp;to support research identifying improved, more targeted treatments. It turns out that the Helmsley Charitable Trust is the largest private philanthropic organization focused on Crohn&rsquo;s disease, the inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Led by Pradipta Ghosh, M.D., a professor in the UC San Diego departments of Medicine, and Cellular and Molecular Medicine, the team of UCSD researchers tap into and leverage the expertise of the principal investigator. A physician-scientist, and G-protein biologist who is dually trained in cellular and molecular biology and gastroenterology, Dr. Ghosh is the founding director of the UC San Diego Institute for Network Medicine.
