The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced a significant reduction in funding for indirect costs associated with research grants. Effective immediately, the NIH will cap indirect cost rates at 15%, a substantial decrease from the previous average of nearly 30%, with some institutions previously receiving rates exceeding 60%. This policy change is expected to save approximately $4 billion annually.

As reported by multiple mainstream media such as MSN, the impact on the academic research setting could be significant.
