Nearly One Third of Americans Could Be On GLP-1 Agonists or GLP-1/GIP Drugs In Just a Few Years

TrialSite continues to chronicle the absolute surge in demand for the class of metabolic drug known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, also known as GLP-1 analogs, GLP-1DAs, or incretin mimetics, drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.&nbsp;Novo Nordisk and its semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) remains the dominant pharmaceutical manufacturer but also coming up strong is Eli Lilly with their novel tirzepatide (Zepbound), a novel GLP-1 receptor agonist and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide&nbsp;(GIP)-based drug that works by activating the GLP-1 receptor, which mimics the actions of the hormone GLP-1 that the gut releases after eating.&nbsp;GLP-1 agonists can help lower blood sugar levels, manage metabolism, and reduce appetite.&nbsp;They can also slow down how quickly food leaves the stomach and slightly increase metabolism, which can help burn more calories while resting.&nbsp;Johann Hari, an author, recently writes that the impact of the new generation of weight-loss drugs-based on the brands above becomes overwhelming&mdash;with up to 20-30% of the population prescribed.
That&rsquo;s right, nearly a third of the American population could be on these drugs in the future given obesity rates approaching over 40% of the U.S. population which is now 333 million people.&nbsp;This is perhaps one reason why analysts working with the investment community and the life sciences sector estimates a market size of $100 billion by 2030.
