A special administrative area of the People’s Republic of China, Macau is a former Portuguese colony and hub of gambling as the city of approximately 710,000 is known to support. Recently, the newly established Macau Union Hospital announced a collaboration with the Macau Association of Health Service Executives to position Macau as “a leading centre for rare disease treatment in the Greater Bay Area.” Macau is part of the Greater Bay Area, a heavily densely populated region of China including the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) in 2023, with over 86 million people. The GBA is the largest and most populated urban area in the world. While the former Portuguese colony now falls under Chinese rule, it’s called “one country two systems,” as the city is called a special administration area.
