A pivotal study led by Carlos K.H. Wong and colleagues at the University of Hong Kong has provided some of the first real-world evidence on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in children aged 1-3 years. Published in Frontiers in Immunology, this research investigates the protection conferred by mRNA (BNT162b2) and inactivated (CoronaVac) vaccines in non-hospitalized children infected with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in Hong Kong. Given the limited clinical data on vaccine effectiveness in this age group, this study fills an urgent knowledge gap in pediatric COVID-19 immunization.
