Sailuotong (SLT), a novel herbal extract, holds promise as a treatment for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among older people, according to new research from Western Sydney University's NICM Health Research Institute in Australia. The trial's results, published in the journal Alzheimer's and Dementia, found participants taking SLT showed improvements in aspects of memory and executive function compared to those taking the placebo.
MCI is characterized by cognitive decline, including memory and thinking difficulties. The condition is often considered a precursor to dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. No approved pharmaceutical interventions for MCI currently exist, and Alzheimer’s disease treatments are not considered safe or effective. Approximately 17% of people over the age of 60 are living with MCI globally.
