In July of 2023, TrialSite reported on how tech billionaires were now funding scientific research and addressing both the potential for great positive and negative associated with this development. The article pointed out because of Covid grants were now being provided by organizations like Fast Grants and the Arc Institute because science funding mechanisms are too slow in normal times and needed to be sped up during the pandemic crisis. It is often forgotten the delivery technique for the mRNA vaccine was developed at the University of Pennsylvania. But now, academia faces a challenge because even with grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the pay for scientists falls short of corporate incomes. And that problem could be trouble for Big Pharma.
