Diabetic drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy (Semaglutide) have become so popular that people with the disease diabetes have led to shortages of medications for diabetics. In fact, the use of the drugs, specifically in New York City, has shined a light on the disparity of health care in the United States. Wealthy people got access to the drugs for weight loss while poorer diabetics could not. The medications are so popular the maker of both Wegovy and Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, now has sway over the economy of their home county Denmark. The diabetes medications have even been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use to treat childhood obesity in adolescents 12 years and over. According to Novo Nordisk the side effects of the drugs are mild to moderate. “Semaglutide has been extensively examined in robust clinical development programs, large real world evidence studies and has cumulatively over 9.5 million patient years of exposure,” a statement from the pharmaceutical company said. But what kind of reaction do older people have to the drugs when used for weight loss.
