Mass Vaccination Nation in a Surprising Place—Cuba Starts with Toddlers @2-Years & Up

This communist island containing about 11.2 million people represents the first nation worldwide to include systematic vaccination of young children, in this case as young as 2 and up. Seeking to open schools back up—they have been closed since last spring for the most part—the government initiated the aggressive campaign with products technically still considered investigational. With a relatively sophisticated medical research community for the size of its economy as measured by GDP, despite embargoes and blockades over the years, the Communist Party here has collaborated with China and other nations on a number of efforts during the pandemic. The Cubans have developed two indigenous vaccines now in the mass vaccination program, based on recombinant protein technology. Known as the Abdala and Soberana vaccines, the government launched its inoculation initiative recently, focusing first on ages 12 and up.
