Researchers from the Intermountain Healthcare Heart Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah found only 6% of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease are in fact following their statin regimen. This represents a deplorable situation that endangers patient health.
Intermountain Healthcare researchers also uncovered that 25% of patients never filled their statin prescription in the first place and 25% failed to fill their second prescription!
Possible reasons include:
- A bias against statins
- Concern that they are already on too many medications
- Concerns about side effects
- Incorrect belief that after a few years on statins, they are cured and do not need to take them any more
- Not important
