According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people who have been completely vaccinated should continue wearing face masks, social distancing, and avoiding crowds. Even if a person has been fully vaccinated, they can still spread the virus to other people. They pose a lower risk, but community transmission continues with vaccinated populations, which endangers more vulnerable populations. "The vaccine only saves lives and reduces the risk of serious illness and death, but does not stop community transmission," said Mariangela Simaothe, the WHO's Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products. “It’s extremely important that vaccinated people still wear masks and maintain social distancing.” As TrialSite has reported, some emerging research shows that face masks reduce the risk of spreading large COVID-19-related droplets by up to 99.9% when a person speaks or coughs. But the science isn’t conclusive. And of course, in places like America the mask has been politicized, some could make the case beyond reason. Most governments align on the importance of masks in combating a respiratory-driven, highly contagious virus.
