The U.S. has alleged that Chinese government-linked hackers are targeting Moderna, the U.S.-based biotech developing a COVID-19 vaccine based on advanced mRNA technology. An unnamed U.S. security official who is, “tracking Chinese hacking,” has made this claim. China has denied the claims, declaring that they are not engaged in any such activity. All of this is in the context of rising tension with the U.S. Justice Department indictment of two Chinese nationals accused of spying on three other unnamed U.S. based targets focusing on medical research. This indictment reveals, according to recent news releases, that hackers linked to the Chinese government, “conducted reconnaissance,” targeting Moderna’s computer network.
