Biden Appears to Get More Political Now Using Federal Power to Drive Behavior That’s Already Occurred

Earlier in the pandemic, TrialSite wrote about the horrific death count spreading across nursing homes in both the United States and Canada. We emphasized data-driven, risk-based approaches and early care when possible during that time. A lot has changed over the past half-year. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) maintains a comprehensive tracker of how many people have received a vaccination against COVID-19. Across all states, about 82% of nursing home residents were fully vaccinated by mid-July, with about 60% of the health staff vaccinated, with significant variation by region (e.g., California and Hawaii high, the South low). Put another way, by July 18, nearly 3,500 nursing homes (about 25%) had reached an industry threshold of nearly two-thirds staff vaccination. COVID-19 resident deaths by July declined to the lowest rate since the pandemic began, about one in every 3,000 residents. With an overall nursing home vaccination rate of 82%, it must be recognized that at least some percentage of this vulnerable and frail population will have some comorbidities and conditions that countervail any automatic vaccination decision.
