A ‘Universal Coronavirus Vaccine:’ CEPI’s $3.5b Quest to Eradicate Infectious Disease Threats

Launched just in 2017 thanks to a large cash infusion from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a global partnership to develop vaccines to overcome future epidemics, recently initiated a major worldwide initiative in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Declaring that the pandemic “bought the world to its knees,” CEPI seeks a global response, one that can “break the cycle of panic and neglect that has characterized our response to epidemic and pandemic disease.” Now it announces an ambitious $3.5 billion moon shot to eradicate the threat of the coronavirus and similar pandemic-causing pathogens from human existence. A big and bold plan, it's one that needs considerable financial backing.
